A Cigar Place
The place for Cigar news and events.
This month’s featured brand

Steel City Cigars is an independent boutique brand built on passion, craftsmanship, and culture. Led by owner and master blender Tony Rawlings, Steel City has grown from a love of premium tobacco into a company with manufacturing relationships in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic and a growing presence at cigar lounges and events.
In an industry built on tradition, Steel City is carving out its own identity—one rooted in blending, creativity, and community. From concept to blend, each cigar is designed to balance strength, flavor, and construction, with a portfolio that ranges from traditional profiles to bolder expressions and the Steel Sweet collection of flavored and infused cigars.
Steel City Cigars is still writing its story. With new blends, events, and retailer partnerships, the brand’s focus is on sustainable growth while protecting the personality that made it distinctive in the first place: good tobacco, good music, good people, great cigars.

Cigar Education

The Perfect Cut
Start every cigar with a clean, confident cut. Learn how to choose between straight, V, and punch cutters, where to trim the cap, and how much to remove so the cigar draws smoothly without unraveling.

Mastering the Light
Lighting a cigar is a slow ritual, not a race. We’ll walk you through toasting the foot, rotating the cigar over the flame, and checking for an even burn so every draw is cool, flavorful, and consistent.

Storage Mastery
Great cigars deserve the right home. Understand humidity, temperature, and humidor setup so your collection ages properly, avoids cracking or mold, and is always ready to share or savor.
STEEL CITY CIGARS: BUILT ON PASSION, CRAFTED WITH PURPOSE
An Independent Cigar Brand Bringing Together Tradition, Creativity, and a Culture All Its Own
In an industry built on tradition, Steel City Cigars is carving out its own identity—one rooted in craftsmanship, relationships, and the belief that a great cigar should offer more than a good smoke. It should create an experience.
Led by owner and master blender Tony Rawlings, Steel City Cigars has grown from a passion for premium tobacco into an emerging boutique cigar brand with an expanding portfolio, manufacturing relationships in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, and a growing presence at cigar lounges and events.
A Brand Built Around the Experience
For Steel City Cigars, the cigar is only part of the story.
The brand was created around the culture that surrounds premium cigars—the conversations, music, friendships, celebrations, and moments that happen when people sit down together and light up.
That philosophy has helped shape Steel City’s approach to events and customer relationships. Rather than simply putting cigars on a shelf, the company works to introduce consumers to the people, inspiration, and craftsmanship behind each blend.
From intimate lounge appearances to cigar-and-jazz events, Steel City Cigars is developing a reputation for bringing energy and personality wherever the brand goes.
From Concept to Blend
At the center of Steel City Cigars is a commitment to blending.
Rawlings takes an active role in developing the company’s cigar profiles, working with different combinations of wrappers, binders, fillers, strengths, and vitolas to create cigars with distinctive personalities.
The portfolio reflects a willingness to explore both traditional and unconventional ideas. Steel City has developed cigars ranging from approachable, creamy profiles to richer expressions featuring notes associated with cedar, leather, pepper, coffee, earth, nuts, and chocolate.
The goal is not simply strength.
The goal is balance, complexity, construction, and character.
Among the concepts demonstrating the company’s creative approach is Split Decision, a distinctive 6 x 54 perfecto designed around multiple wrapper experiences and the ability to approach the cigar from either end. It represents the type of experimentation that Steel City Cigars hopes will distinguish the brand in an increasingly competitive premium-cigar market.
Two Countries. One Vision.
Steel City Cigars is building its manufacturing strategy around two of the world’s most respected premium-cigar producing countries: Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
The two-country approach provides the company with access to different tobacco traditions, growing regions, fermentation techniques, and blending possibilities.
Nicaraguan tobacco offers Steel City opportunities to create the bold, complex profiles associated with regions such as Estelí, Jalapa, and Condega, while Dominican production provides another platform for developing refined and balanced premium cigars.
Rather than forcing every Steel City cigar into the same flavor profile, the company intends for its portfolio to showcase different expressions of premium tobacco while maintaining a recognizable Steel City identity.
The Steel City Portfolio
Steel City Cigars continues to build a portfolio that reflects the character, history, and attitude behind the brand.
Signature names include Yinzer, Hill District, Dirty Burgh, Steel Curtain, Bell Ringer, Mean Green, Joe’s Garage, Hurricane 5, and Split Decision.
Names such as Hill District, Dirty Burgh, Steel Curtain, and Yinzer reinforce the Steel City identity and give the portfolio a personality deeply connected to the culture that inspired the brand.
Each cigar is designed to stand on its own, offering a different smoking experience while remaining part of the larger Steel City family.
The company has also developed its Steel Sweet collection, expanding the portfolio into flavored and infused cigar experiences for customers looking for something outside the traditional premium-cigar profile.
That diversity is intentional.
Steel City does not believe every cigar smoker wants the same experience. Some smokers prefer a bold Maduro after dinner. Others want something creamy and approachable earlier in the day. Some enjoy traditional tobacco exclusively, while others appreciate flavored cigars.
Steel City’s portfolio is designed to give those different smokers a place within the same brand.
Cigars, Jazz and Community
One of the most recognizable elements of Steel City’s identity is its connection between premium cigars and live music—particularly jazz.
For Rawlings, that connection is personal.
His background includes time around the jazz community and the influence of his father, drummer Cecil Brooks III. That history has helped inspire Steel City events that combine premium cigars, live musicians, cigar lounges, and the social atmosphere that naturally develops around both cultures.
It gives Steel City something difficult to manufacture artificially: a story.
The brand’s events are not simply sales stops. They are opportunities for consumers to meet the people behind the cigars, hear live music, discover new blends, and become part of the Steel City community.
Independent by Design
The premium cigar industry is filled with historic names and multinational companies. Steel City Cigars represents another important part of that industry: the independent entrepreneur.
Being independent creates challenges. Production, tobacco procurement, packaging, importing, distribution, marketing, compliance, and retailer relationships all require significant investment and attention.
But independence also provides freedom.
Steel City can experiment.
It can listen directly to customers.
It can create a cigar because the idea is interesting rather than because it fits neatly into a corporate product category.
And it can build relationships with retailers and cigar smokers one lounge at a time.
That entrepreneurial mentality remains central to the company’s direction.
The Next Chapter
Steel City Cigars is still writing its story.
With continued development in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, an expanding cigar portfolio, retailer and lounge partnerships, live events, and new blending concepts, the company’s focus is increasingly on sustainable growth while protecting the personality that made the brand distinctive in the first place.
The ambition is bigger than selling another box of cigars.
Steel City Cigars is working to build a recognizable premium-cigar company—one capable of earning shelf space through quality while earning customer loyalty through experience.
For Tony Rawlings, every new blend, retailer, event, and customer represents another piece of that journey.
And in true Steel City fashion, the foundation remains straightforward:
Good tobacco. Good music. Good people. Great cigars.
